August 5, 2012 – Lunch

Written by: Second Stomach

Blizzard and I had just spent a few hours at the Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden so it was finally time to grab lunch. It was already getting late and we were getting hungry. Bunk Sandwiches seemed like a good idea so within minutes, Blizzard was able to find the location near us and as we approached it, we found a small line-up coming out the door of this very tiny sandwich shop.

Fortunately, there was a big board featuring their sandwiches there for us to consider while we waited in line:

Bunk Sandwiches seems to do a lot of take-out as well. Here’s a look at their take-out menu:

Here’s what Blizzard and I each had for lunch today:

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Pulled Pork Sandwich – $8

– This was a pulled pork sandwich with apple-cabbage slaw, mustard, and pickles, served in a poppyseed bun. This came to us served warm.

Here’s a better look inside the sandwich:

– It was a bit different than the typical pulled pork sandwiches that I’ve seen. This one had a tangy mustard flavor rather than a barbeque flavor. It wasn’t sweet since it was much heavier in the mustard.

– This was an incredibly wet and messy sandwich – definitely a sign of a great sandwich. This type of sandwich should be eaten right away to truly appreciate it. Eating it later would ruin the experience.

Taste: 4.5/5

Kettle chips

These were the kettle chips that came with our sandwich today. Just a nice small accompaniment with our meal.

There are multiple locations for Bunk Sandwiches and even this location had a line up at around 2:30 pm! Our pulled pork sandwich today was very tasty and I believe the rest of the menu is on par with that. I had originally thought I ordered the pork belly sandwich which I have been told is their most popular sandwich. Unfortunately, a mis-communication occurred and I was offered a second sandwich. Although I didn’t take the offer, I really appreciated the gesture. I look forward to visiting Bunk Sandwiches again at my next visit to Portland.

The good…

– Multiple locations

– Great tasting sandwiches

The bad…

– Line-ups

– Limited seating
