September 16, 2012 – Afternoon snack

Written by: Second Stomach

Walking by any bakery is a temptation. We needed a snack and the cream puffs in the window of Anna’s Cake House beckoned us over. We were anxious to try one especially since cream puffs have been made popular by Beard Papa’s.

We picked up a bunch of buns to consume later and then selected a strawberry cream puff for a snack. In the background, you can see the sign that claims that their buns are 25% bigger and that there is also more filling in each bun. I suppose this sign is to justify the higher prices for the buns – around $1.25 per bun (almost twice what I’m accustomed to). I would put this claim to the test later, but for now, my focus was on the cream puff.

Strawberry Cream Puff – $1.50

- Anna’s has the regular vanilla cream puff and the strawberry cream puff. Today, these were on special for $1.50 each.

- You can see that the filling has real strawberry! In fact, we were pleasantly surprised to find that there were plenty of strawberry pieces inside. Too bad the filling didn’t have much flavor.

- The puff itself was slightly soggy. I can’t help but compare the puff to Beard Papa’s – maybe it’s a little unfair, but Anna’s puff doesn’t measure up. The only redeeming factor is the real strawberries inside Anna’s puff. Snowman said he appreciated having real fruit instead of some simulated strawberry flavor.

Taste: 3.5/5

Presentation: 4/5

Value: 4/5

The strawberry cream puff at Anna’s Cake House was worth our stopover. It was a good snack to temper our hunger for the timebeing. I did end up trying some of the buns that we picked up in the following days. With the claim that the buns are 25% bigger, I do have to agree that they were bigger but I didn’t find that there was significantly much more filling so I question whether they are truly worth the $1.25 per bun. I tried a BBQ pork bun and the filling didn’t have the sweet-savory kick that I crave in a BBQ pork bun. I’ll have to try the buns again when they are fresh because having them a few days later just isn’t the same.

The good…

- Multiple locations

The bad…

- Higher priced buns.. worth the $?
